Eldborg crater
Eldborg crater is considered to be the most complete volcanic crater in Iceland and probably in the world. The crater Eldborg (The Fire Castle) is situated only and hour and a half drive from Reykjavik. It is the most symmetric crater in Iceland and considered by many the most beautiful one. It rises 65 meters above ground, its 200 m in diameter and 50 m deep. It is estimated that the surrounded area of Eldborg was active around 6000 years ago. The last recorded eruption was mentioned in Saga “The book of Settlements” (Landnámabók). The best way to approach the crater is from the parking area to its south. The walk takes about an hour and people are asked to stick marked paths due the sensitivity of the vegetation. Eldborg is a protected natural area.
