Did you know...

The weather in Iceland is not as cold as you might think. (Winter is a heck of a lot colder in Minnesota than it is in Iceland!) The climate is relatively mild because of the influence of the Atlantic Ocean’s Gulf Stream. Average winter daytime temperature in Reykjavik is 31 degrees F. (−1 degrees C.)

Skiing

Winter skiing in Iceland is available in many parts of the country. Skiing resorts with both cross-country and downhill skiing are found throughout Iceland. Summer Ski in Iceland skiing is possible at Kerlingarfjöll, close to the Hofsjökull glacier in the interior. A ski-school is operated there from the end of June until the end of August. Weekend stays can be arranged at the school. Accommodation, food and rental of equipment can be provided for guests who are not registered at the school.

The biggest ski resort in Iceland is the Bláfjöll Skiing Area, 30 minutes from Reykjavik it has 11 lifts. Everybody, from beginners to experienced competitors, can find a slope suited to his or her ability, and in evening the main slopes are illuminated. Cross-country tracks from 3.5-10 km are made weather permitting, and a 5-km section is illuminated. There is also a refreshment center selling food and drink, with facilities for those who have brought their own.
